The well known and historic electric vehicle manufacturing company, Detroit Electric, has recently revealed that they intend to release a series of very affordable electric cars worldwide, as soon as 2009! This will be a progressive come back, starting late this year.
The plans were unveiled to the Malaysian government in the past few weeks. The government of Malaysia described the plans as being the first step of many towards taking the world into a new ‘greener’ era. Detroit Electric is planning to distribute it’s electric vehicles in Malaysia first, and then moving slowly across the rest of the world.
Over 5 million American Dollars have been invested into Malaysia based government research to develop cleaner car engines and they have been working closely with Detroit Electric over the past two years. Detroit Electric’s electric motor engines have been integrated and tested in cars manufactured by Lotus, VW, Daihatsu and Proton, with more cars being added to the list with every passing year. The engines performed particularly well in Lotus’s Elise, although the present drive system that the engine was working with was far superior than any of the other test models, although nobody would be able to afford an electric Lotus Elise.

This is interesting news indeed. Any news of prototypes being developed or about what is in the pipeline? I see that the Alias no longer visible at the Detroit Electric website only at the ZAP website
