With plug-in hybrids largely the domain of hobbyists, and major auto companies still working on concept models, it was only a matter of time until someone stepped in to fill that gap.
As the interest in Tesla Roadsters have shown, there is a market for high-end luxury cars. It is into this niche that Fisker Automotive steps with their “Eco-Chic” line of automobiles, which they are planning to unveil the first model of at the Detroit Auto Show in January of 2008.
While Fisker’s website reveals little as of yet, we do know a few things. Firstly, Fisker Automotive is a combination of Fisker Coachbuild LLC and Quantum Technologies, two companies that can bring forward the elements of an elegant design and a highly capable power system.
Secondly, whatever the resulting car of this merger, it will likely look incredible, as CEO Henry Fisker has been responsible for such designs as the BMW Z8 and the Aston Martin DB9.
Thirdly, we’ll likely see the cars around town sooner than you’d think. While the yearly production run will be set at 15,000, the cars are to cost under $100,000. This prices them quite competitively when compared to luxury level gasoline powered automobiles. Combined with a “Quantum Drive” plug-in chassis, the car will have all of the benefits of an plug-in hybrid without sacrificing any of the comfort associated with a luxury car.
For those of use who can’t afford a luxury hybrid, this still bodes well, as hot competition in the hybrid car market will trickle down to benefit us all. While few concrete details have been supplied, it looks like Fisker Automotive will be coming to Detroit in January with a strong contender for the luxury hybrid market.
